Designer's art auction
Christie's is set to auction late fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent's art collection (to February 25), which includes Renaissance jewellery, paintings by Picasso and Matisse and 18th-century Chinese artefacts, the sale of which Beijing is trying to block.


Obama meets governors
Barack Obama, US president, and his cabinet are to meet governors of the 50 US states and other territories to discuss the federal government's legislative agenda.


Russia remembers defenders
Russia celebrates Defenders of the Fatherland Day, when Russians who died defending their country are remembered.


European visit to Gaza
Hans-Gert Pöttering, European Parliament president, is due to lead a delegation to Gaza to assess the needs of the civilian population (to February 24).


Fairtrade fortnight
Fairtrade fortnight (to March 8) aims to encourage consumers to buy goods bearing the Fairtrade mark, and puts pressure on governments and businesses to support fairtrade initiatives.


FBI outlines terrorism fight
Robert Mueller, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is scheduled to give a talk on the FBI's role in combating global terrorism.


Hindus honour Shiva
Hindus fast to observe Maha Shivaratri, a festival honouring Shiva.


Food exhibition in Dubai
Dubai is to host Gulfood 2009 (to February 26), which showcases products from the food and hospitality trades.

New Orleans is to host Mardi Gras.


US-Japan summit
Taro Aso, Japanese prime minister, is due to visit the White House, where he and Barack Obama, US president, will discuss global security.


Obama lays out vision
Barack Obama, US president, is due to address a joint session of Congress to outline the plans and goals of his administration. Bobby Jindal, governor of Louisiana, is due to make the Republican party response to Mr Obama's address.


Bernanke report
Ben Bernanke, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, is due to address the US Senate banking, housing and urban affairs committee and deliver a semi-annual monetary policy report.


IT forum
VMworld Europe in Cannes (to February 26), will bring together IT professionals, executives and technology providers to discuss IT infrastructures.

Thai monetary policy
Thailand's central bank is expected to cut interest rates following a big fall in the consumer price index.


Armenia criticised
Human Rights Watch is due to release its report, "Armenia: Democracy on Rocky Ground".


Polar expedition
Pen Hadow, a polar explorer, is to lead a team to the North Pole to measure the impact of global warming on the Arctic. The journey on foot is expected to take 100 days.


The role of sport
The Global Sports Forum in Barcelona will aim to debate the role of sport and its future in society (to February 27). Speakers include Jonah Lomu, former New Zealand rugby player.


Milan fashion week
Milan Fashion Week will preview autumn/winter women's wear designs (to March 4).


Music awards
Music magazine NME is to hold its 2009 awards show. The Cure will be honoured, Franz Ferdinand will perform and Barack Obama, US president, is nominated for Hero of the Year.

New York hosts the International Arts Expo, the world's largest popular and fine art fair (to March 2).


Indian state elections
India will hold elections for the state legislatures of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, the eastern state of West Bengal and the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.


Kosovar leaders visit US
Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state, is due to host Kosovar leaders Fatmir Sejdiu and Hashim Thaçi in support of Kosovo's independence.


US budget proposal
Barack Obama, US president, is to launch his first budget proposal.

Singapore is to host BikeAsia, a showcase of the best in the bicycle and motorcycle industry.


Working families forum
Joe Biden, US vice-president, is to chair a taskforce in Philadelphia on middle-class working families to find ways to raise the living standards of middle-class Americans.

Power Shift 2009, a young person's summit, is due to hold debates and news conferences to mark US president Barack Obama's first 50 days in office (to March 2).

The United Nations General Assembly is set to begin inter-governmental negotiations on expanding the Security Council.

Taiwan's Peace Memorial Day marks the day in 1947 when riots were crushed by Chinese troops.

Jakarta is due to host the World Islamic Economic Forum (to March 3). Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesian president, will make opening remarks.


Bolivia ejects DEA
The deadline for the US Drug Enforcement Agency to withdraw from Bolivia is due to pass. The move was initiated by the US's suspension of Bolivia's from the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act.


Pope marks Lenten fast
Pope Benedict XVI is expected to lead a service on the first Sunday of Lent.
