White House Says Flights Carrying Injured Haitians to U.S. Will Resume

The White House said Sunday it will resume a U.S. military
airlift of Haitians seriously injured in the earthquake --
some with devastating burns, head and spinal chord trauma,
amputations and other wounds -- to American hospitals. The
humanitarian effort was suspended five days ago following
complaints from the state of Florida that its hospitals were
overwhelmed.

U.S. Senate Confirms Ben Bernanke for a 2nd Term as Fed Governor

The Senate confirmed Ben S. Bernanke to a second term at the
helm of the Federal Reserve. The confirmation was a victory
for President Obama, who had called Mr. Bernanke a critical
leader in the nation's recovery from recession, but the
rancor surrounding the vote also signaled the extent to which
the Fed, once little known to the public, has become the
object of populist anger over high unemployment and bank
bailouts.

U.S. Senate Clears Way to Confirm Ben S. Bernanke in New Term at Fed

The Senate indicated that it would confirm Ben S. Bernanke

financial crisis has come under criticism, could also take
place on Thursday. Mr. Bernanke's current four-year term

J.D. Salinger, Author of 'The Catcher in the Rye,' Is Dead at 91

J. D. Salinger, who was thought at one time to be the most
important American writer to emerge since World War II but
who then turned his back on success and adulation, has died
in Cornish, N.H., where he lived in seclusion for more than
50 years, his son told The Associated Press. He was 91.

Mr. Salinger's literary reputation rests on a slender but
enormously influential body of published work: the novel "The
Catcher in the Rye," the collection "Nine Stories" and two
compilations, each with two long stories about the fictional
Glass family: "Franny and Zooey" and "Raise High the Roof
Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction."

G.M. Reportedly Agrees to Sell Saab to Spyker

General Motors has struck a preliminary deal to sell Saab to
Spyker Cars, a tiny Dutch maker of high-end sports cars,
according to an official with knowledge of the deal, saving
Saab from what seemed like certain extinction after earlier
bids for the Swedish unit of G.M. collapsed.

G.M. had begun the process of shuttering Saab's production
line and other facilities in Trolltattan, Sweden, at the
beginning of the year, but the deal with Spyker will halt
that process and buy time for Saab to begin rolling out new
cars.

Stocks Fall Sharply for Third Day; Dow Has Fallen About 5% Since Tuesday

Investors bid stocks down sharply on Friday for the third
straight day, prompted by concerns about President Obama's
proposal for tighter restrictions on banks.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 10,173.00, down
216.90 points or 2.09 percent for the day, in preliminary
figures. The index has now fallen about 5 percent since
Tuesday.

Bankers, traders and investors were surprised on Thursday
when the president proposed prohibiting banks with federally
insured deposits from speculating heavily in financial
markets, and limiting further consolidation in the industry.

Congress, easing decades-old limits on their participation in
federal campaigns.

The court on Thursday overturned a 20-year-old ruling that
said corporations can be prohibited from using money from
their general treasuries to pay for campaign ads. The
decision almost certainly will also allow labor unions to
participate more freely in campaigns and threatens similar
limits imposed by 24 states.

The justices also struck down part of the landmark
McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that barred union- and
corporate-paid issue ads in the closing days of election
campaigns.

Citigroup Reports a $1.6 Billion Loss in 2009

Even as it untangles itself from the federal government,
Citigroup has shown few signs of a quick recovery. On
Tuesday, the banking giant announced its second consecutive
yearly loss.

The bank said that it lost about $1.6 billion in 2009 --
after a $18.72 billion loss the year before. It also reported
$7.6 billion loss in the fourth quarter, the result of a
$10.1 billion accounting charge tied to the repayment of its
bailout money, which ended any chance of a profit. Last year,
the bank had a fourth quarter loss of $8.29 billion or a
$1.72 a share.

Pentagon Report on Fort Hood Shooting Details Failures

Calling the military's defenses against threats from within
its ranks outdated and ineffective, Defense Secretary Robert
M. Gates said that the Army mishandled warnings about the
poor performance and radical views of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan,
the military psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people in a
shooting spree at Fort Hood, Texas, on Nov. 5. Several
officers who supervised Major Hasan during his psychiatric
training in the Washington area may be disciplined, he said.

Google Threatens Pullout From China After E-Mail Accounts Are Hacked

Google threatened to end its operations in China after it
discovered that the e-mail accounts of human rights activists
had been breached.

The company said it had detected a "highly sophisticated and
targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating
from China." Google says further investigation revealed that
"a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail
accounts of Chinese human rights activists." Google did not
specifically accuse the Chinese government. But the company
added that it is "no longer willing to continue censoring our
results" on its Chinese search engine, as the government
requires. Google says the decision could force it to shut
down its Chinese site and its offices in the country.
