Asia-Europe summit
Foreign ministers from Asian countries and the European Union attend the ninth Asia-Europe summit in Hanoi (until May 26). Discussions will focus primarily on the global economic crisis.

US Memorial Day
Memorial Day, a national holiday, is held in the US to remember those who have died in the nation's service.

Tuesday
MAY 26

Obama meets Mubarak
Barack Obama, US president, is to hold talks with his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak in Washington as part of efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East.

Sustainability discussed
A three-day conference titled "Sustainable development: a challenge for European research", opens in Brussels. The event, organised by the European Commission, brings together scientists and industrialists to discuss the role of research in global sustainable development.

Health and technology
The Global Health Council holds its international conference in Washington (until May 30). There will be a particular focus on the use of new technologies in aiding healthcare.

Digital developments
The All Things Digital Conference opens in Carlsbad, California (until May 28), featuring leaders of the digital technology industry.

Transport in the downturn
The International Transport Forum is holding a four-day conference in Leipzig focusing on the challenges and opportunities for transport in the economic downturn.

Space station mission
A Soyuz space craft is due to take off in Kazakhstan for the International Space Station. Expedition 20 will mark the start of six-person crews aboard the station. All five of the international partner agencies – the US, Russia, Japan, Europe and Canada – will be represented among the crew for the first time.

Champions League final
European football's Champions League final takes place in Rome, between defending champions Manchester United and Barcelona.

Carbon fair and conference
Carbon Expo, the trade fair and conference for companies operating in the CO2 market, opens in Barcelona (until May 29).

Writer's work honoured
The winner of the Man Booker International Prize is announced. The biennial prize, of £60,000 ($95,000, €68,000), is awarded for a body of work rather than a single novel.

Trade body meets
The general council of the World Trade Organisation assembles for a two-day meeting in Geneva.

Abbas visits White House
President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority is due to meet Barack Obama at the White House as part of the US president's drive to reinvigorate the Middle East peace process.

Missile policy discussed
The two-day Missile Defence Conference, organised by the Royal United Services Institute, begins in London. One issue considered will be the new US administration's policy on missile defence.

Energy questions analysed
The two-day Munich Economic Summit focuses on securing energy supplies but also curbing climate warming. It brings together industrialists, politicians and academics.

Opec members meet
Opec, the umbrella group for oil exporting countries, is to hold an extraordinary meeting in Vienna.

Human rights report
Amnesty International presents its annual report in London on the state of human rights in more than 150 countries.

Publishing trade show
BookExpo America, the publishing trade show and conference, begins its four-day run in New York.

Business opportunities
The two-day National Business Opportunity Show, which aims to demonstrate the opportunities and training available to people wishing to start their own business, begins in London.
