South Korea hosts south-east Asian summit; new computer and video games go on show; Tiananmen Square massacre is commemorated; European parliamentary elections begin; cricket's World Twenty20 tournament begins; African finance ministers meet; Lebanon goes to the polls




Monday

JUNE 1

South Korea hosts summit
Lee Myung-bak, president of South Korea, is due to meet the leaders of the Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean) at a summit on the Korean island of Jeju (until June 2). The agenda includes the nuclear threat from North Korea, economic matters and climate change.

Arms reduction talks
A second round of negotiations between the US and Russia on a new strategic arms reduction treaty opens in Geneva (until June 3).

Atlantic hurricane season
The six-month Atlantic hurricane season begins, with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicting a 50 per cent probability of a near-normal season, a 25 per cent probability of an above-normal season and a 25 per cent probability of a below-normal season.

Blair view on Middle East
Tony Blair, representative of the Middle East Quartet, appears before the British parliament's foreign affairs committee. He will answer MPs' questions on developments in the Israel-Palestinian conflict.



Tuesday

JUNE 2

Computer games on show
E3 Expo, North America's leading computer and video game trade show, begins a three-day run in Los Angeles.

Licensing conference
Licensing International Expo, the conference and exhibition concerned with the licensing, branding and merchandising of products, opens in Las Vegas (until June 4).

American nations gather
The general assembly of the Organisation of American States takes place in San Pedro Sula, Honduras (until June 3). The status of the Falkland Islands is among the issues due to be discussed by representatives of the 35 member states.

Magritte museum opens
A museum dedicated to René Magritte opens in the former Brussels home of the 20th century surrealist painter.

Dalai Lama visits Iceland
The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist leader, gives a talk in Reykjavik during a nine-day international tour that will include lectures in Amsterdam (on Thursday) and Paris (on Sunday). France has previously attracted China's ire for hosting the exiled Tibetan leader.



Wednesday

JUNE 3

Tiananmen anniversary
It is the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, in the wake of which hundreds of Chinese calling for democracy were killed and countless others injured and detained by the authorities.

Hydrogen fuel discussed
A one-day conference on hydrogen fuel cell technology for powering vehicles takes place in London.

Baltic states assemble
The Council of the Baltic Sea States holds a two-day ministerial session of its 11 member nations together with a European Commission representative, in Elsinore, Denmark.

Naval role in security
A two-day conference on the maritime contribution to security is staged by the Royal United Services Institute in London, featuring an international array of naval and defence chiefs and industrial and independent experts.

Labour conference
The annual International Labour Conference, organised by the International Labour Organisation, begins in Geneva (until June 19), and will focus on the employment and social consequences of the global economic downturn.

Zuma addresses nation
Jacob Zuma, South Africa's new president, gives his first State of the Nation Address before parliament in Cape Town.

Corruption snapshot
Transparency International, the anti-corruption organisation, publishes in Brussels an opinion survey of citizens' experiences and views on corruption in both public and private sectors in 69 countries.

Orange Prize announced
The winner of this year's Orange Prize for Fiction, the award for women novelists, is announced at a ceremony in London.



Thursday

JUNE 4

European elections begin
Four days of voting begin across Europe to elect 736 members to the European Parliament for a five-year term.

Obama visits Egypt
Barack Obama, US president, is due to give a speech in Egypt on his aim of redefining America's relations with the Muslim world.

Russia hosts economic forum
The St Petersburg International Economic Forum (until June 6) will be addressed by Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's president, and leading international business executives. Much of the discussions will concentrate on the global economic crisis.

Sport meets technology
The Sport and Technology Conference in London allows owners of sports properties and rights to meet the providers of technological and digital services for the industry.

Advertising conference
The American Advertising Federation holds its national conference and awards in Arlington, Virginia (until June 6).

Darwin edition at book fair
A first edition copy of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of the Species, valued at $110,000 (€78,863, £68,800), will feature at the 52nd Antiquarian Book Fair in London (until June 6).

Friday

JUNE 5

World Twenty20 begins
Cricket's second World Twenty20 competition begins in England (until June 21), with the hosts playing Holland at Lord's, London. The event sees both the men's and women's tournament integrated for the first time.

Concentration camp visit
President Barack Obama of the US visits Buchenwald Concentration Camp at Dresden, Germany.

JUNE 6

African economic summit
African finance ministers meet in Cairo for two days to discuss measures for dealing with the world economic crisis.

D-Day commemorated
Activities in northern France commemorating the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings will be attended by Barack Obama, US president.

Horseracing double
Two of horseracing's biggest flat races take place on opposite sides of the Atlantic. The Epsom Derby is run in England while the Belmont Stakes is staged in Elmont, New York.

Lebanese go to the polls
Lebanon holds parliamentary elections, in which the present opposition faction, led by Hizbollah, will be seeking to gain a majority of seats.

Tony Awards presented
The Tony Awards, the US theatre prize ceremony, is held in New York.

Venice Biennale opens
The Venice Biennale, the international arts festival, opens (until November 22).

Television celebrated
Canada's Banff World Television Festival opens (until June 10).
