The data include gross domestic product, inflation, employment, public finances and other indicators for all 27 European Union countries. Asian bankers meet The two-day annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank, which is attended by central bank governors, finance ministers and bankers, is held in Nusa Dua, Bali. US defence conference The security challenges for the new US administration and what they mean for the defence industry are discussed at the US Defense Conference in Washington (until May 5). Tuesday May 5 Bernanke weighs economy Ben Bernanke, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, is appearing before Congress's Joint Economic Committee in Washington for a hearing on the economic outlook for the US. Mr Bernanke will evaluate the economy, progress on recovery and the longer-term outlook. Online winners announced The winners of the 2009 Webby Awards, the leading international prizes for websites, interactive advertising, online film and video, are announced in New York. Automotive technology The International Forum on Advanced Microsystems for Automotive Applications opens in Berlin. The two-day conference aims to unveil the latest technology for improving car safety, reducing emissions and enhancing energy efficiency. Detroit holds mayoral poll Dave Bing, the former US basketball star turned businesseman, contests Detroit's mayoral election with incumbent Ken Cockrel Jr. Wednesday May 6 South African president South Africa's National Assembly elects the new president of the republic, who is expected to be Jacob Zuma, leader of the African National Congress. White House summit President Barack Obama of the US is due to begin two days of talks on Afghanistan and Pakistan with his respective counterparts, Hamid Karzai and Asif Ali Zardari, in Washington. Global retailing discussed The World Retail Congress, which includes the World Retail Awards ceremony, opens in Barcelona (until May 8). European business week The European Union begins its first European SME Week, a campaign to promote entrepreneurship and to inform business people about support available for them at European, national and local level (until May 14). Economies reviewed Britain's National Institute of Economic and Social Research is to publish its latest quarterly economic review of the UK and world economies. Construction on show Turkeybuild, the construction trade show, takes place in Istanbul (until May 10). Nato exercises in Georgia Natobegins two military exercises in Georgia (until June 1). Their aims are to improve interoperability between Nato and partner nations, and training in peace support operations. About 20 countries and some 1,000 troops will be involved in total. Eastern partnership for EU The European Union is to establish the Eastern Partnership, designed to enhance its relationship with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus. The aim is to eventually establish free trade agreements with these nations. Accounting conference A two-day conference titled "Financial Reporting in a Changing World" begins in Brussels. The range of accounting issues to be addressed include those raised by the global financial crisis. Badminton trials begin The Badminton Horse Trials, the leading international eventing competition, begins in Gloucestershire, England (until May 10). Friday May 8 Pope visits Holy Land PopeBenedict XVI begins an eight-day visit to the Holy Land, going first to Jordan before travelling to Israel, from where he will visit Bethlehem in the West Bank.
