Israel's decision makers begin a three-day security summit; the Czech parliament debates ratification of the Lisbon Treaty; Palestine's president is due to address the European parliament; the US president attends an annual prayer meeting; South Africa's president addresses parliament; Barack Obama delivers his first weekly radio talk; the Baftas are handed out in London



Monday

February 2

Herzliya conference
A three-day summit of Israel's decision-makers, focusing on the balance of national security with regard to international relations, society, economics and the Jewish world, begins in Herzliya.


Sports sponsorship
Europe's biggest sport sponsorship business conference begins in Munich. Two days of forums and discussions will take place at the Ispo winter trade fair.


Venture capital meeting
Super Return, a three-day European private equity and venture capital summit, opens in Berlin.


Rove subpoenaed
Former White House adviser Karl Rove has been subpoenaed to appear before a House of Representatives committee investigating the firing of US attorneys for apparently political reasons.


European parliament meets
The European parliament gathers in Strasbourg this week. Debates include legislation to penalise employers of illegal immigrants and an overview of energy strategy following the Russia-Ukraine gas crisis.


Banking bill debate
The UK banking bill reaches its report stage in the House of Lords today and tomorrow. Proposals include bolstering protection for client money and assets held in investment companies.


Senate to take up stimulus
The US Senate is expected to debate its version of the American recovery and investment plan that was agreed in the House of Representatives last week. Lawmakers intend to pass the legislation and send it back to Barack Obama, US president, by mid-February.


Whale plan
The International Whaling Commission's chairman William Hogarth is expected to issue a public proposal in Tokyo that would allow Japan to engage in coastal whaling off its own shores in exchange for a commitment to scale back its controversial "research whaling" in Antarctic waters.


Asia opium report
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's report on opium production in south-east Asia is released today in Bangkok. The report is likely to say that there has been an increase in opium cultivation.

Tuesday

February 3

Czech treaty debate
The parliament of the Czech Republic debates whether to ratify the Lisbon treaty. Vaclav Klaus, president, has said he will only ratify the reform treaty once Ireland's position has been clarified in a second referendum.


Global development
Ministers, officials and academics meet in Kuwait City for the three-day Global Development Conference. They will discuss sustainable growth in developing economies.


Commonwealth vision
William Hague, UK shadow foreign secretary, delivers a foreign policy address in London outlining the Conservative party's vision for the UK's relationship with the Commonwealth.

Wednesday

February 4

Abbas address
Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian president, is scheduled to address the European parliament.


Howard lecture
John Howard, former Australian prime minister, lectures in Toronto on "The Grand Chessboard: Politics and Policy".


Polar satellite launch
Nasa will launch the latest in a series of polar-orbiting satellites for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA-N gathers facts about the environment for weather and climate research.


Monet under the hammer
Monet's 'Dans La Prairie'

Christie's in London holds a sale of impressionist and modern art, including Claude Monet's "Dans La Prairie", which is expected to fetch in the region of £15m. One of the artist's early works, it depicts his wife Camille submerged in a field full of flowers in Argenteuil, near Paris. Art investors will be watching to see how the financial crisis affects auction prices.


Purvanov meets Medvedev
Georgi Purvanov, Bulgarian president, is due to begin a three-day visit to Russia. He is expected to meet Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's president.


CEO development forum
The forum acts as a curtain-raiser to the three-day Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, which begins in the city tomorrow. The forum takes as its theme: "Climate change: perspectives from the change makers in business." It will consider the challenges that chief executives are likely to face because of climate change.


CEO development forum
Hiroshi Watanabe, now head of the Japan Bank of International Cooperation and a former currency policy chief, is to hold news conference on latest developments in the bank's business.

Thursday

February 5

National prayer breakfast
Barack Obama, US president, will address an annual multi-faith worship meeting in Washington DC.


Copehagen fashion festival
The biannual three-day Copenhagen International Fashion Fair showcases new clothes collections.

Friday

February 6

Presidential address
Kgalema Motlanthe, South Africa's president, delivers his annual address to a joint sitting of parliament. He is likely to outline plans for the next financial year and reflect on how his government is meeting its service delivery objectives.


Tarp oversight report
Neil Barofsky, appointed by the Senate in December as inspector-general for the troubled asset relief programme, publishes his first report on how funds in the US banking bail-out package are being spent. The former prosecutor is mandated to produce his first report within 60 days of his appointment, and quarterly thereafter.


Security on the agenda
Wolfgang Ischinger, Germany's ambassador to the UK, chairs the 45th Munich Security Conference. The agenda of the three-day meeting considers Nato's future and the challenges represented by a new world order.


Indian opposition meets
The main Indian opposition party, Bhartiya Janata, begins its three-day national executive meeting in Nagpur.

February 7

Obama speaks
Barack Obama, US president, will deliver the first weekly radio and video address of his tenure.

Sunday

February 8

Bafta awards
The Orange British Academy Film Awards will take place at the Royal Opera House in London. Nominations for best film include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon


Electricity expo
The three-day Middle East Electricity Summit, the region's largest power and electricity exhibition, opens in Dubai. More than 850 exhibitors will take part.
