U.N. Security Council Adopts New Sanctions Against Iran Over Nuclear Program
Moving firmly away from the Obama administration's previous
emphasis on wooing Iran, the United States pushed through a
new round of United Nations sanctions against Iran on
Wednesday because of its nuclear program.
The new sanctions, a modest increase from previous rounds,
are mainly aimed at the Iranian military and took months to
negotiate. But they do not carry the symbolic weight of a
unanimous Security Council decision, because two of the 15
nations now on the council -- Brazil and Turkey -- voted
against the measure. Lebanon abstained.
