New British Coalition Leaders Propose Law to Set Firm 5-Year Term for Parliament
The leaders of the new coalition government in Britain, David
Cameron of the Conservative party and Nick Clegg of the
Liberal Democrats, said Wednesday that they would introduce a
bill to establish a five-year fixed term for Parliament. A
fixed term would be a major departure from the existing
system, which allows a ruling party to choose when to call
general elections, as long as they are no more than five
years apart.
The leaders declared that they would be able to maintain a
stable government for five years despite disagreements
between their parties.
