Brown Announces Resignation as British Prime Minister
Saying it was clear that he could not muster a majority in
Parliament after the recent, inconclusive general election,
Gordon Brown announced his resignation as prime minister of
Britain and leader of the Labour Party. He then traveled with
his wife and children to Buckingham Palace to formally resign
and to recommend that David Cameron, the Conservative leader,
be invited to form a government.
