News Alert: U.S. Economy Grew at a 3.2% Annual Rate in First Quarter

Breaking News Alert
The New York Times
Fri, April 30, 2010 -- 8:36 AM ET
-----

U.S. Economy Grew at a 3.2% Annual Rate in First Quarter

The United States economy continued to expand in the first
quarter, but economists cautioned that the pace of growth is
still not nearly fast enough to recover ground lost during
the recession.

National output grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of
3.2 percent last quarter, after growth of 5.6 percent in the
fourth quarter of 2009 and 2.2 percent in the third quarter.

The steady growth has quelled fears that the downturn is not
quite over. Consumers were a major contributor to the
expansion last quarter. Consumer spending grew at an annual
rate of 3.6 percent in the first part of the year, after
growing at an annual rate of 1.6 percent in the previous
three months.

Hewlett-Packard to Buy Palm for $1.2 Billion

Hewlett-Packard said on Wednesday that it would acquire Palm,
the struggling cellphone maker, for $1.2 billion in cash.

Palm had begun exploring a sale as it continued to struggle
in the marketplace. While the company has won acclaim for
webOS, its new smartphone operating system, its new products
like the Pre and the Pixi have failed to draw customers away
from rivals like Apple and Research in Motion.

News Alert: Fed Keeps Short-Term Interest Rates Near Zero

Breaking News Alert

Fed Keeps Short-Term Interest Rates Near Zero

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday kept short-term interest
rates near zero and maintained, as it has for months, that
rates would stay at that level for "an extended period."

Despite intense market speculation, the central bank
disclosed nothing about the fate of the $2.3 trillion balance
sheet it accumulated as it acquired mortgage-backed
securities in an effort to prop up the housing market.

The Fed reiterated its expectation that the benchmark fed
funds rate would remain "exceptionally low," as it has since
December 2008, for "an extended period," despite growing
concerns among policy makers that the stance was too
constraining.

Regulators Approve First Offshore Wind Farm in U.S.

After nine years of regulatory review, the federal government
gave the green light Wednesday to the nation's first offshore
wind farm, a sprawling project off the coast of Cape Cod.

The approval of the 130-turbine farm gives a significant
boost to the nascent offshore wind industry in the United
States, which has lagged behind far Europe and China in
harnessing the strong and steady power of ocean breezes to
provide electricity to homes and businesses.

Greek Debt Downgraded to Junk Status by Standard & Poor's

Greece's debt has been downgraded to noninvestment status by
Standard & Poor's amid mounting fears that the debt crisis in
Europe is spiraling out of control.

In a statement Tuesday, the agency said that it was lowering
its rating on Greece's debt three full notches, to BB+ from
BBB -- the first level of speculative, or junk, status.

The outlook is negative, meaning the agency could downgrade
the rating again.

Senate Republicans Vote to Block Debate of Financial Oversight Legislation

Senate Republicans, united in opposition to the Democrats'
legislation to tighten regulation of the financial system,
voted on Monday to block the start of floor debate.

The vote was 57 to 41, as Democrats fell short of the 60
votes needed to cut off a filibuster of the motion to proceed
to the bill. One Democrat, Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska,
sided with Republicans apparently out of concern over a
provision related to tightening the rules on derivatives
trading.

News Alert: Goldman Sachs Messages Show It Thrived as Economy Fell

Goldman Sachs Messages Show It Thrived as Economy Fell

In late 2007 as the mortgage crisis gained momentum and many
banks were suffering losses, Goldman Sachs executives traded
e-mail messages saying that they were making "some serious
money" betting against the housing markets.

The e-mails, released Saturday morning by the Senate
Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, appear to
contradict some of Goldman's previous statements that left
the impression that the firm lost money on mortgage-related
investments.

In the e-mails, Lloyd C. Blankfein, the bank's chief
executive, acknowledged in November of 2007 that the firm
indeed had lost money initially. But it later recovered from
those losses by making negative bets, known as short
positions, enabling it to profit as housing prices fell and
homeowners defaulted on their mortgages. "Of course we didn't
dodge the mortgage mess," he wrote. "We lost money, then made
more than we lost because of shorts."

Obama Lays Out Demands for Regulating Financial Industry

President Obama is traveling to the shadow of Wall Street on
Thursday to counter what he calls "the furious efforts of
industry lobbyists" trying to weaken or kill new financial
regulations that he says are needed to stave off a second
Great Depression.

As the Senate debates how to rewrite rules governing the
financial industry, Mr. Obama will lay out the elements he
insists must be in any legislation to get his signature.
Among them are more consumer protections, limits on the size
of banks and the risks they can take, reforms on executive
compensation and greater transparency for controversial
securities known as derivatives.

Airport, an indication that the worst of the air traffic
crisis plaguing Europe may be coming to an end.

"The Civil Aviation Authority has approved the opening of UK
airspace from 22:00 today," or 5 p.m. New York time, said a
statement from Heathrow Airport.

Goldman's Revenue and Earnings Top Forecast

Beset by charges of securities fraud, Goldman Sachs
nevertheless showed Tuesday that it was still very good at
what it does best: making money.

Earnings for the Wall Street giant rose 91 percent in the
quarter, to $3.46 billion or $5.59 a share in the first
quarter of 2010, while revenues increased 36 percent to
$12.78 billion.

Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had expected revenue of $11.05
billion and earnings of $4.14 a share.

Once again, the bank's bond, commodities and currency trading
bolstered the results.

After four days of deliberations, the jury also found Mr.
Conroy guilty of attempted assaults on three other Hispanic

He was acquitted of the most serious of the 20 charges

Gates Says U.S. Lacks Strategy to Curb Iran's Nuclear Drive

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has warned in a secret
three-page memorandum to top White House officials that the
United States does not have an effective long-range policy
for dealing with Iran's steady progress toward nuclear
capability, according to government officials familiar with
the document.

Several officials said the memo touched off an intense effort
inside the Pentagon, the White House and the intelligence
agencies to develop new options for President Obama. They
include a revised set of military alternatives, still under
development, to be considered should diplomacy and sanctions
fail to force Iran to change course.

S.E.C. Accuses Goldman Sachs of Fraud on Mortgage Deals

Goldman Sachs, which emerged relatively unscathed from the
financial crisis, was accused of securities fraud in a civil
suit filed Friday by the Securities and Exchange Commission,
which claims the bank created and sold a mortgage investment
that was secretly devised to fail.

The move marks the first time that regulators have taken
action against a deal that helped investors capitalize on
collapse of the housing market. Goldman itself profited by
betting against the very mortgage investments that it sold to
its customers.

Poll Finds Tea Party Anger Rooted in Issues of Class

The fierce animosity that Tea Party supporters harbor toward
Washington and President Obama in particular is rooted in
deep pessimism about the direction of the country and the
conviction that the policies of the Obama administration are
disproportionately directed at helping the poor rather than
the middle class or the rich, according to the latest New
York Times/CBS News poll.

News Alert: Toyota to Temporarily Stop Selling Lexus GX460 After Safety Warning

Toyota to Temporarily Stop Selling Lexus GX460 After Safety Warning

Toyota says it will temporarily stop selling the Lexus GX460
after Consumer Reports said the SUV carried an unusually high
risk of a rollover accident during certain types of turns.

In the latest blow to Toyota's reputation, the Japanese
automaker says it will suspend sales of the SUV while it
conducts its own testing.

Consumer Reports says that in handling tests, the seven-seat
SUV slid until it was nearly sideways before the electronic
stability system regained control.

The magazine says this could lead to a rollover accident in
real-world driving. It gave the GX460 a rare "Don't Buy:
Safety Risk" label until the problem is fixed.

Toyota has sold about 5,000 GX460s in the three months since
it went on sale. It is not covered by Toyota's faulty
gas-pedal recalls.

First Lady Michelle Obama Makes Surprise Visit to Haiti

Michelle Obama, the first lady, and Jill Biden, the wife of
the vice president, arrived in Haiti Tuesday morning for a
surprise visit. They took a helicopter tour of quake-battered
Port-au-Prince, where more than a million people are
homeless, many living underneath tents and tarps.

The visit, which the White House kept secret, comes one day
after Haitians marked the three-month anniversary of the
7.0-magnitude earthquake. Mrs. Obama is on the way to Mexico
for her first solo overseas trip.
