Burmese Activist Found Guilty; House Arrest to Continue
In a trial that was being closely watched and roundly
condemned by the international community, a court in Myanmar
on Tuesday found the pro-democracy activist Daw Aung San Suu
Kyi guilty of violating the terms of her house arrest and
sentenced her to three years in prison.
The ruling military junta immediately reduced that term to a
year and a half and said that she could serve that time under
house arrest, news agencies reported from the main city of
Yangon.
