Paterson Aide Charged With Assault

David W. Johnson, one of Gov. David A. Paterson's closest
aides, surrendered to Bronx prosecutors Thursday morning to
face misdemeanor assault charges, a person briefed on the
matter said.

Mr. Johnson arrived at the office of the Bronx district
attorney shortly before 9:30 a.m. and was expected to be
formally charged later Thursday morning. Mr. Johnson is the
man at the center of a domestic violence scandal that led to
Mr. Paterson's decision not to seek election.

A special investigation into the scandal found that though
Mr. Paterson and his advisers made errors of judgment in
their handling of a domestic violence case involving Mr.
Johnson, their actions were not criminal.

G.M. Reports Net Income of $1.3 Billion as It Prepares for Public Offering

General Motors said Thursday that it had net income of $1.3
billion in the second quarter, becoming the third Detroit
automaker to report stronger results.

The quarterly profit marks G.M.'s strongest financial
performance since 2004, and sets the stage for the automaker
to file for an initial public stock offering as soon as
Friday. It was the company's second consecutive quarterly
profit.

The automaker reported revenue of $33.2 billion in the second
quarter compared with $31.5 billion in the first. Earnings in
the first quarter were $865 million.

Dow Falls 2.5% Amid Concerns of a Slowdown; Nasdaq Drops Nearly 3%

Shares on Wall Street retreated in the wake of the
announcement by the Fed that it would buy government debt and
as new trade figures suggested a slowdown in growth in the
United States. The trade data came on the heels of economic
reports from China that indicated that its economy was
slowing.

At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was 2.5
percent, while the broader Standard & Poor's 500-stock index
dropped 2.81 percent. The technology heavy Nasdaq fell 3
percent.

Markets Fall 2% on Concerns About Slowing Recovery

Shares on Wall Street quickly retreated Wednesday morning in
the face of the Fed's decision to buy government debt and
more economic news that pointed to a slowdown, both in the
United States and China.

In the bond market, the price of the 10-year Treasury note
continued to rise, as yields fell to lows not seen in more
than a year. The 10-year yield was at 2.72 percent from 2.76
percent late Tuesday.

And the dollar strengthened against the euro, but hit a
15-year low against the yen, driving the Nikkei index sharply
lower.

President Obama, won a primary battle Tuesday that was seen

Mr. Bennet beat a former statehouse speaker, Andrew Romanoff,
who was endorsed by former President Bill Clinton.

Ned Lamont Loses Connecticut Democratic Primary for Governor, AP Reports

In a surprising upset, Dan Malloy, a former mayor of
Stamford, Connecticut's fourth-largest city, defeated Ned
Lamont, a multimillionaire businessman who tried
unsuccessfully to oust Senator Joseph I. Lieberman four years
ago.

His victory sets up a contest with Thomas Foley, a prominent
Republican fundraiser and former ambassador under President
George W. Bush who won the Republican primary on Tuesday.
Republicans have held the governor's office in Connecticut
since 1991.
