Michael Jackson's Doctor Is Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter

Michael Jackson's personal physician, Conrad Murray, was
charged on Monday with involuntary manslaughter for providing
Mr. Jackson with a powerful anesthetic that was ruled a major
factor in his sudden death nine months ago.

The charges cap an investigation that revealed Mr. Jackson's
heavy reliance on narcotics, including propofol, an
anesthetic normally used in surgery but administered to Mr.
Jackson, 50, as a sleep aid.

Dr. Murray, a cardiologist with offices in Houston and Las
Vegas, had acknowledged giving Mr. Jackson the drug shortly
before the singer was found unconscious on June 25 in a
rented mansion in Los Angeles, according to police
affidavits. The coroner determined that Mr. Jackson had died
from "acute propofol intoxication," combined with other
sedatives.

Jobless Rate Down to 9.7%; 20,000 Jobs Lost in January

In its latest report on employment, the government said on
Friday that American employers shed 20,000 nonfarm jobs in
January and that job losses in 2009 were worse than
previously reported. Though the government's survey of
households found a drop in the unemployment rate, to 9.7
percent in January from 10 percent in December, the new
figures raised concern that the recovering economy may be
slow to bring relief for workers.

Sovereign Debt and Job Worries Push Stocks Down Sharply; Dow Industrials Fall 2.6%

Two of Wall Street's biggest fears -- a deteriorating
employment picture and the debt woes facing foreign
governments -- re-emerged on Thursday, pushing stocks sharply
lower. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 2.6% and briefly
dipped below 10,000 before closing at 10,002.18 in
preliminary figures; broader indexes slid nearly 3 percent.

Thursday's trading brought hefty declines across the board,
with a possible crisis in the European financial system
overshadowing news of robust earnings for technology
companies.
